Solar Pizza Box Oven

Project title:
Solar Pizza Box Oven
High school
None

Hypothesis:

If solar light cooks food faster than light bulbs, then the sun will cook the food five minutes faster than the artificial light.

Materials:

o 1-70 watt ultraviolet light bulb
o 1-70 watt florescent light bulb
o 1-70 watt halogen light bulb
o 1-70 watt irridescent light bulb
o 1 electrical lamp
o Solar Pizza Box Oven
o 1 Container (Large enough to hold all of the Corn Dogs)
o Notebook to record your information
o Thermometer
o Aluminum Foil
o Scissors or Knife
o 10 corn dogs
o Safety Equipment (Goggles, Apron, Hair Tie, and Heat-Resistant Gloves)

The Procedure:

1. Gather all needed materials, read the entire procedure before beginning the experiment, and make sure that you understand them fully. Put on all your safety equipment.
2. Lay your pizza box oven out in the sun for 10 minutes to pre-heat it.
3. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
4. Open the corn dogs’ package and cut some aluminum foil into 8x8 inch pieces and set them aside until the oven is pre-heated.
5. Before the oven is pre-heated, lay an 8x8 inch piece of foil in the oven. After the oven is pre-heated, two corn dogs on top of the foil.
6. Close the pizza box and let the corn dogs cook under the sun for 2 minutes, then check the temperature, and continue to do this every 2 minutes until the corn dogs get done. Take the corn dogs out after they’re done cooking and set them aside in the container.
7. Every time you take the temperature, be sure to record the info in your notebook.
8. When you are done with this part of the experiment, take the oven inside and let it cool to room temperature in the room.
9. After the oven cools, screw the florescent light bulb into the lamp. To do this, you must put the bulb into the socket on the lamp and twist the light bulb to the right until it is tight. Then plug into the wall socket. Make sure your hands aren’t wet.
10. Put an 8x8 inch piece of foil in the pizza box and turn on the lamp. Put the oven under the light and let it pre-heat for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes put on heat-resistant gloves and the corn dogs in the oven and let it cook until it’s done and check the temperature every two minutes. Remember to record the temperatures in the data table.
11. Put on heat-resistant gloves and unscrew the light bulb and put the next one in the socket.
12. Repeat steps 8-11 for the other three light bulbs.
13. When you are done with the experiment and you have washed your hands with soap and water thoroughly for at least 20 seconds, then you may eat the corn dogs. Enjoy!
