Hypothesis:

My hypothesis states that of various types of material (listed below) marshmallows will be the best padding material for my egg drop, because they are spongy and would absorb the impact not allowing the egg to crack.

Materials:

Empty 18 oz. plastic peanut butter jar,
2 dozen raw eggs,
measuring stick marked off in meters,
ladder,
scissors,
pen,
paper,
black marker,
newspaper,
marshmallows,
birdseed,
cotton balls,
bubblewrap,
tissues,
sawdust,
insulation.

The Procedure:

Gather all materials. Measure eggs to make sure you use the same size throughout experiment. Measure and mark side of jar with marker at 6.2 centimeters,this will ensure that the same amount of padding material is used during experiment.

Choose one of your padding materials and fill the jar to the 6.2 centimeter mark, place egg pointed side down in jar, finish filling jar to the top and place lid on.

Eggs should be dropped on same surface type during experiment. Jar needs to be dropped the same way every time so that it lands on it's bottom.

Drop the jar from it's first height(1 meter).Open jar and inspect egg for damage(cracks).
if egg is cracked record your results, if the egg survived the fall,place egg back in jar and drop from next height.

Keep repeating experiment from different heights until egg shows visual damage.

Results:

The birdseed proved to be the best out of all seven padding materials used.The egg that was placed in the birdseed survived the highest drop point at 3.6 meters.
