 | Project title: FREEZING WATER RACE |
Difficulty level: | Middle school |
Main link: | None |
Hypothesis:
What liquid freezes faster? (water, salt water, or sugar water) This experiment is to find out which water, regular tap, sugar or salt will win the race to freezing point. My prediction of the winner is regular tap water. I believe this to be true because I feel that salt or sugar would slow down the process of freezing.
Materials:
1. 3 ceramic containers (blue, orange, red)
2. 1/2 cup of regular tap water in each container
3. 1 tablespoon of salt
4. 1 tablespoon of sugar
5. measuring cup
6. timer
7. freezer
8. spoon
The Procedure:
1. Arrange 3 ceramic containers, blue, red, orange
2. Fill each container with 1/2 cup regular tap water
3. Leave blue container as regular tap water
4. Add one tablespoon of sugar to orange container
5. Add one tablespoon of salt to red container
6. Mix well to disolve ingredients
7. Put containers in freezer
8. Leave in freezer for 30 minutes
9. Check for results after timer goes off. Log in book
10. Leave for another 30 minutes (1 hour) in freezer
11. Check for results afer timer goes off. Log in book
12. Leave for another 30 minutes (1 hour 30 minutes) in freezer
13. Check for results. Log in book.
Results:
After the first test of 30 minutes in the freezer, the blue container consisting of regular tap water was frozen to touch. The orange container, sugar water, was barely frozen to touch. The red container, salt water, was not frozen at all, no change in the water, just colder. After the 2nd test of 1 hour, the blue container, was almost frozen solid. The orange container, was slightly frozen with a little bit of ice particles around container. The red container was barely frozen. After the 3rd test, a total of 1 hour 30 minutes, the regular tap water was frozen solid. The sugar water was almost frozen but still mostly liquid. The salt water was slightly frozen but still mostly liquid form. In conclusion, the regular tap water was the contestant that won the race to freezing the fastest. Sugar water ran in 2nd with salt water placing third.
